The "Squash Your Fat" Trick

Here is a little trick used by competitive recreational squash players who need to lose their summer fat and get back into game shape for the winter squash season.

It is a simple trick founded on the fact that your body is a machine that reponds to the instructions that you give it. In this case, you are instructing the machine to start burning the fat you stored over the summer and to begin rebuilding the muscles you will need for squash season.

The "Squash Your Fat" Trick

Schedule a friendly match that will end 2 to 3 hours before you go to bed. Choose an opponent who is your equal or slightly better -- somebody that is close enough to your skill level to keep you running, but not so good that you spend the night standing around on the court watching them play. Play hard for at least one hour to really crank up your metabolism.

Eat a cup of rice (or pasta) and drink a glass of orange juice before you play. Eat another cup of rice (or pasta) and drink a glass of cold water when you get home. Then, just before you go to bed, eat a single serving of plain instant oatmeal sweetened with an ounce of milk and two packets of Splenda.

As you sleep, your body will metabolize the starchy carbohydrates from the rice (or pasta) and oatmeal. In the process of turning these carbs into muscle glycogen, it will burn stored body fat. Therefore, you will wake up with a little less fat on your body than you had when you went to bed.

Be sure to eat breakfast within an hour of getting up in the morning so that your body does not reverse the process and start storing fat in response to hunger. (In fact, it is best to continue eating every three hours so that your body never switches back into fat-storing mode.)

Repeat this trick 2 or 3 times a week for the first 8 weeks of the season. Before you know it, the summer fat will be gone and you will be able to compete with players who are ten years younger than you.

Of course, this trick is not exclusive to squash players. If you don't play squash, just substitute any strenuous physical activity that burns more than 500 calories per hour. Then lie down and let your body follow the instructions that you have given it.
