Badminton Shoe Buying Tips

YONEX POWER CUSHION AERUS 3R COURT SHOE BLUE
Not all badminton shoes are created equal.
We sell hundreds of pairs of badminton shoes to players at all levels every month. And since most of our customers are repeat customers, we get a lot of feedback and we get many opportunities to see firsthand which shoes customers choose to buy again and which they do not. In addition to that, most of our staff play badminton themselves. So we get to spend a lot of time around people who play a lot of badminton and we get a chance to see what works for them and what does not.

YONEX NOT THE ONLY BRAND

Yonex ™ is our top selling brand of badminton shoes. There is no question about that. Yonex’ dominance in this category is partly deserved and partly undeserved. It is deserved in the sense that they make good quality badminton shoes worn by some of the world’s best badminton players. However, it is undeserved in the sense that other manufacturers make equally good badminton shoes that some players refuse even to consider as badminton shoes.

Asics, for example, like Yonex, is headquartered in Japan and is renowned for making top quality court shoes which are perfectly suitable for badminton and other court sports. In fact, some of their models, are made specifically for badminton. And perhaps most importantly, Asics shoes are designed for North American feet and therefore tend to fit North American feet better than Yonex shoes. Yet many badminton shoe customers completely overlook Asics badminton shoes because they don’t association the name Asics with badminton.

Asics is not the only brand to suffer this fate, though. Babolat, for example, makes slightly roomier shoes than either Yonex or Asics which are perfectly suitable for both recreational badminton and North American foot shapes, but few players even consider Babolat when looking for badminton shoes.

So our first piece of advice for customers shopping for badminton shoes generally is to take off the blinkers look at brands beyond the narrow world of Yonex. While there is no question that Yonex makes excellent shoes, there is also no question that Yonex shoes are designed primarily for the Asian market while other brands are equally good and tend to be better fits for North American feet.

NOT ALL SHOES ARE MADE FOR ADULTS

Shoe companies are smart. They understand their customers better than their customers understand themselves. For example, they all understand that they don’t have to make all of their shoes equally well because not all customers are going to wear their shoes for an equally long period of time.

Every year, for example, major brands like Yonex and Asics release one or two models that are designed for teenagers who will generally outgrow their shoes before they have a chance to wear them out. Naturally, these shoes are of lower quality than shoes which will be worn by adults over long periods of time. They have enough grip to last for a month or two.

They are built well enough to last through a typical six-to-eight-week high school badminton program. However, they are not built well enough to be suitable for adults who will be wearing them over the long haul. Nevertheless, they come in adult sizes and there are always adult players willing to buy them because they think they are getting a deal. They are not.

Therefore the second tip in our buying guide is to make sure that you are buying the right GRADE of badminton shoes. If you are buying for a teen who will only be playing for a short period in a school program, you may be able to get away with BUDGET grade badminton shoes. However, if you are an adult whose feet have stopped growing, avoid BUDGET grade shoes and go straight to RECREATIONAL or COMPETITIVE grade shoes instead.

BE CAREFUL WHO YOU LISTEN TO

Finally, while many players tend to get their information regarding shoe purchases from other players, other players are usually not the best source of information when it comes to badminton shoes. Why is this? If you look around the courts where you play, you will see that most players are wearing shoes that are more than two seasons old any many have not purchased shoes in four years or more.

Think about the cell phone or computer you had four years ago. Shoe technology has been changing equally fast. So do you really want to make a decision about your footwear technology based on information offered by a customer who last bought shoes four years ago?

Materials and technologies are changing so quickly that even large department and box stores cannot keep up with the latest developments. In fact, large sporting goods stores order their shoes so far in advance that the shoe technology they offer is sometimes out of date before it even hits their shelves. The Yonex Aerus is a great example of this phenomenon. By the time most of the major sporting goods stores had Aerus shoes on their shelves, most of the high caliber players had already decided that the shoe was not a good one and were already moving on to the next big thing.

As a shoe buyer, your best course of action is to come into our store and try some shoes on. Our staff will find out where you are playing, how often you are playing, the level you are playing at and other important details. They will then be able to recommend a category of shoes that are suitable for your needs.

We carry a variety of badminton shoes in a variety of width suitable for both Asian and North American players. We know the difference between budget, recreational and competition grade shoes and we are completely up-to-date on the latest shoe technology.

Customer Advisory – Yonex BG66

CUSTOMER ADVISORY – YONEX BG66

[Calgary] Racquet Network has issued a Customer Advisory regarding Yonex ™ BG66 badminton string following a series of complaints from customers regarding durability.

There are three strings in the series — BG66, BG66 ULTIMAX and BG66 POWER — all of which were created by Yonex to serve customers who want more power. All three strings are exceptionally thin. BG66, the original, is just 0.66 mm thick while the others are even thinner at 0.65 mm.

“Over the past six months, more than a dozen customers using BG66 have returned re-strung racquets to our Calgary store complaining about premature breakage,” says Racquet’s Network’s owner Brent Johner. “Several of these customers claimed that the strings broke the first time they used them.”

A recent inquiry to Yonex Canada resulted in this response by email: “BG66U [BG66 ULTIMAX] is definitely not for everyone. Its a very thin gauge for high response. It will break sooner than other strings.”

“In this particular case,” says Johner, “the issue appears to be one of customer education. Therefore we will be taking steps to ensure that customers purchasing BG66 are aware of the string’s design and intended use.”

Strings in the BG66 series appear to be designed for use with feather shuttlecocks. Because they are exceptionally thin, these strings should not be used with nylon shuttles. Contact with the skirts of nylon shuttles during smashes may nick the string causing it to break at that moment or during a later stroke.

The BG66 series also does not appear to be suitable for strong players who smash a lot. Rather, it is a thin string intended to help juniors, women and smaller players who need additional help from their string bed.

“Every single complaint we have had about this string over the past six months has come from an adult male,” notes Johner. “At this point it appears to us to be a classic case of ‘power greed’.”

Men tend to be attracted to anything that promises more power, notes Johner, even though they don’t actually need it. In this case, strong male players appear to be overpowering the structural integrity of this string causing it to fail.

Effective immediately, Racquet Network is advising adult male badminton players using nylon shuttles to stay away from the BG66 series. However, staff will still be recommending the string to juniors and women who genuinely need more powerful string beds.

Yonex Arcsaber 11 Racquet Review

YONEX ARCSABER 11
This racquet is right for me right now. Six months from now, who knows?
As my readers already know, I have returned to badminton recently after a break of several years. Over the first month, I experimented with an number of Yonex ™ badminton racquets before finally settling on the Nanoray GlanZ as the best frame for my game at that moment.

That decision was made a month ago. At the time, the GlanZ offered me exactly what I needed. After a long break, my timing was off and I was not hitting the shuttle directly in the center of the string bed. Since the GlanZ is a forgiving racquet with a large sweet spot, it was perfectly suited to my game at the time.

Now, a month later, my game has progressed and it is time for a new frame. So last week, I tried a variety of Yonex frames including the Arcsaber Flash Boost, the Voltric Z-Force II and the Nanoray Z-Speed.

The Flash Boost I tried was a 5U weight, which was far too light for me. The Nanoray Z-Speed was heavier (4U), but still wasn’t heavy enough. As with the GlanZ, my clears with both of these racquets were not deep enough to push my opponents back. Instead, they were dropping five to six feet inside the court, which was setting up too many successful smashes for my opponents.

My experience with the Voltric Z-Force II was the opposite. Instead of dropping inside of the court, I was actually hitting the shuttle out the back and sides of the court. (To be fair, the Z-Force II I played with was a 3U, which is quite heavy and which may be the reason I was hitting out. I did not try the 4U or the 5U.) The head heaviness of the frame coupled with the 3U weight was just too much for my stroke. This racquet is too powerful for me right now.

Much to my surprise, the Arcsaber 11 turned out to be perfectly suited to my game at this moment. While it is a 3U like the Z-Force II I was using, it is not head heavy. In fact, it is evenly balanced. Strung at the bottom of the tension range (for maximum power), my clears with this racquet were dropping about four inches inside the baseline whenever I hit them cleanly. My drops and net shots were exactly how I like them and the racquet was much better for smashing than the lighter GlanZ.

One of the major features of the Arcsaber series is versatility. I am playing in a drop-in group where some of the players are better than me and some are not as good. So every game is a little different. Sometimes I am on the attack; sometimes I am on the defensive. The Arcsaber series is designed for exactly this scenario. While the Voltric series is designed primarily for offence and the Nanoray series is designed primarily for defence, the Arcsaber series is balanced. It is a compromise that allows for a little bit of both.

Right now, given the state of my game, the Arcsaber 11 is the perfect frame for me.
